  • Avoid an Auto Crash

There are 2,500,000 people injured in auto crashes each year.

Getting into a car accident can be devastating for everyone involved. While you can’t always guarantee a safe journey,  there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of being involved in an auto crash.

Read on to learn how to avoid an auto crash with these five tips.

1. Slow Down

The speed limit is an upper limit, not a target. You should always drive at a speed that is safe for the road and weather conditions. As traffic increases and weather worsens, you should slow down.

The slower you are going the more time you have to react and avoid any potentially dangerous situations. And if you are involved in an accident that isn’t your fault, the slower you go, the better the outcome.

Even if you are rushing – remember that a car accident will delay you a lot more than reducing your speed by 10mph will.

2. Avoid Blind Spots

In order to avoid an accident, you need to be able to see it coming.

Make sure that your mirrors give you the best view possible. You should be able to see nearly every part of your car from the driver’s seat. But your mirrors aren’t perfect. Be sure to physically turn to make sure that you can see any blind spots that your mirrors leave.

You also need to be aware of other driver’s blind spots – especially truckers. Try to spend as little time as possible in them. If you are involved in a truck accident, be sure to contact a lawyer that specializes in auto accidents, like The Law Office of E. Marvin Romero.

3. Avoid Distractions

Anything that takes your attention away from the road while driving is a dangerous distraction. Every day, 9 people are killed and over 1000 injured in crashes involving a distracted driver.

It only takes a second for an avoidable accident to become unavoidable. Anything that takes your mind, eyes or hands off the road can be deadly. Something like texting involves all 3 at once.

4. Be Defensive

Make sure you always drive with a defensive mindset. You need to be on the lookout for potential problems before it is too late.

Watch out for cars driving erratically, pedestrians eyeing the road for gaps in traffic and motorbikes. Adjust your speed, and try and get away from potential threats as safely as you can. If you can’t avoid the situation, be prepared to stop abruptly.

5. Know Your Car

Every car is different, so it is important that you know your car to avoid collisions.

You need to know what your car is capable of. Make sure you know how reactive your car is to the breaks, how your tires feel, and how responsive your steering is.

Knowing your car will help you know the right way to react to any situation.

Avoid an Auto Crash

While you can’t control other road users, following these 5 tips will help you avoid an auto crash. 94% of crashes are caused by human error, so respond to the environment, keep your eyes peeled for dangers and be ready to react if the worst happens.
