Getting locked out of your home unexpectedly is frustrating, to say the least. While inconvenient, it is an issue we all face from time to time.

Whether rushing out the door in the morning or juggling too many things at once, keys get misplaced, or doors lock by accident. Here are some essential tips to minimise the risk of being locked out of the house.

1. Make Extra Keys

The first and most obvious solution to not being locked out is to simply have a set of spare keys for when you misplace yours.

The trick is to be aware of where to hide a second set of keys on the property. The location needs to be accessible yet safe, like a kitchen drawer or in your study.

This is a convenient backup in case you need it at any time. Furthermore, another set should be with someone you trust. Preferably a friend or family member who lives nearby.

You can also choose to hide an extra key outside in a secure yet discreet lockbox near your home’s entrance.

Burying or attaching it in a weatherproof container offers fast access for you or a professional emergency locksmith, if needed. Just make sure to place it in an inconspicuous area, but it should be spotted with ease as well.

Moreover, some people choose to hide a secure lockbox with the spare key inside the trunk of their car.

2. Install Smart Locks

If you’re looking for a modern solution to preventing potential lockouts, you can look into installing smart locks on your main doors. This eliminates the use of traditional keys entirely.

With a smart lock system installed at your property, you can have electronic keypads, remote access points, or scanners that open with your fingerprints.

Furthermore, you can use your phone or any smart device to lock or unlock your door. It’s a perfect solution for technology enthusiasts.

In addition, most smart locks are designed to relock the door behind you automatically for added security. Some designs even allow for an entry with a backup key, if you prefer.

Whatever the specifications and cost that suit your needs, your local locksmith will help you with choosing the right fit and installation.

While this is a hefty investment, it adds up to your overall home security and eliminates the issue of being locked out of the house completely.

3. Check Your Locks Regularly

It is a smart tactic to start checking on the health of your locks every month or so. This habit will surely pay off in the long run. This way, you will notice any signs of wear and tear on your locks.

As soon as you notice damage that needs replacing or repair, like stuck keys or jammed locks, you will fix them quickly and efficiently, avoiding a possible lockout.

This doesn’t have to be a daunting chore. All you need is a few minutes every month to keep your home’s entry points in top shape and prevent unwanted lockouts.

Start your routine inspection by giving each door handle and lockset a few test turns with the key. Pay attention to any signs of stiffness, sticking, or grinding noises that indicate a problem.

Once you’ve done a visual and functional inspection, you can lubricate the lock system. Use graphite powder on a cotton swab and slide it into the lock cylinder, coating everything internally.

This will help wash away built-up debris and keep your keys moving smoothly in and out. If any issue persists, a locksmith can assist you by either repairing or replacing the lock or key as needed.

4. Reinforce Door Frames and Strike Plates

An important aspect you will need to check to avoid malfunction and a surprise lockout is inspecting the frames for signs of damage. This can be shown in the form of splits or cracks in the wood.

Gently pull on the frame to check how flexible it is. If it bends or pulls away from the wall easily, then there’s an issue. Secure any loose areas back into place using 3-inch exterior-grade screws.

Moreover, examine the strike plates and the surrounding frames. Then, ensure that their screws are not loose from extended use and replace any worn-out ones. A local locksmith can easily help out with this task if you require it.

Whether you take it on or get assistance from a professional, doing this will help you increase safety and avoid emergency situations.

Reinforcing vulnerable points from time to time makes your entryways more resistant to forced entry or damaged locks.

5. Use a Key Safe

Even with extra keys stashed inside the house, unexpected situations sometimes arise where you’re locked out temporarily. Consider installing a lockable key safe near the front door.

Look for a weather-resistant safe made of a sturdy material like hardened steel that’s able to withstand the elements.

Using combination or electronic keypad locks provides secure access without needing additional physical keys. You can also opt for mounting the safe on the wall away from sight.

Having a fail-safe backup set of keys stored safely outdoors ensures you’ll never be stranded outside the door. The trick is to purchase a reliable brand and cleverly hide it.

6. Save Emergency Contacts

There are days when despite taking all the precautions necessary, a lockout happens anyway. You can be prepared by having all the emergency contact information already set up on your phone.

You should save the numbers of your local 24/7 emergency locksmith services near your home. This decreases the time it will take to actually solve the issue.

It’s a good idea to research multiple operators beforehand and provide yourself with multiple options if an emergency situation should arise.

Being prepared with such information offers valuable peace of mind should you ever accidentally lock yourself out.

7. Install Security Lights

One of the most anxiety-inducing lockout scenarios is realising you don’t have a way inside after dark.

Installing outdoor security lighting helps illuminate entryways and possibly reduce the risk of a potential lockout. They allow you to fully assess the situation with less stress.

Lights not only improve the visibility of locks and keys if you return home late, but they also showcase that your property is actively monitored.

Look for motion-activated flood lights that automatically turn on with any detected movement within their range.

Taking this small step upgrades home security while easing fears of lockouts in dim conditions. Improved lighting provides peace of mind, knowing you won’t fumble with keys or wait in the dark if you require help.

Conclusion

Taking basic precautions from the tips we shared in this article can go a long way in preventing accidental lockouts and the hassle that comes along with them.

If you ever find yourself in a lockout situation, you’ll now always have a reliable backup plan.
