Beijing’s government forced a new security law to Hong Kong. The city had been enjoying immense freedom since British rule ended. The decision is taking the city’s rule into an intense authoritarian track. The Chinese government forced this new security law from July 1. Officials have converted a hotel into their new security office. The hotel is situated in the commercial and rushing district of Causeway Bay.
The authorities will be monitoring the implementation of the new security law all over the city. The new authoritarian rule will penalize any behavior of severance, subversion, a conspiracy of foreign agencies, and terrorism. The people involved in such activities will see consequences up to life long behind bars.
Zhang Yanxiong the head of the office and Carrie lam who is the leader of Hong Kong was present at the opening ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Metropark Hotel which is now the new security office of the city. The hotel provides sight across Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
Mainland security forces to look over crimes
Beijing’s government has placed mainland security agents in Hong Kong. The force will have the power to look over and litigate crimes that tend to destroy national security. The new legislation will also allow deportations to the mainland courts for further hearing. The Communist Party has jurisdiction over those courts.
Beijing government face criticism from the West
Beijing is getting criticism from western countries, human rights groups, and law practitioners. They condemn the new security law as it is very much authoritarian in nature and violates freedom of speech of the city’s people. The new law came into force last week in Hong Kong which was once a British colony.
Detractors of the new security law expressed their concerns about the violation of freedom in the freest city of China. The people who advocated the new legislation said that the law would lead security for the city which had been seeing some brutal protests even last year. Those nuisances created quite a turbulence in the city for years.
