Due to the measures that are necessary to contain the Coronavirus, most sports events have come to a standstill for the coming weeks and possibly even months. If you are a sports fan, you might have to find an alternative now that there are almost no sports to see on TV. Fortunately, there are enough alternatives to bridge this bleak period. This article will discuss 7 sports documentaries to watch during lockdown. Let’s have a look at 7 sports documentaries you can watch to kill your boredom.

Antoine Griezmann: Champion du monde (2019)

This documentary is about, you might have guessed it already, Antoine Griezmann. The film is a biography about the Barcelona striker, up to the final of the 2018 World Cup. The documentary shows a lot of footage from when Griezmann was growing up as a kid and gives an insight into how the France international was already extremely talented at a young age. The crew behind the documentary interview many family members and friends who are able to show a picture of Griezmann never seen on screen before. ‘Antoine Griezmann: Champion du monde’ can be seen on Netflix.

Becoming Champions (2018)

With the documentary series called ‘Becoming Champions’, we stick with the World Cup theme. This series looks at the stories behind the athletes and countries that have achieved World Cup champion status. In this 9-part series, the most striking stories of every world champion are picked, and the biggest highlights are relived. The series stars Anders Holm, Fortune Feimster, Andy Favreau, Josie Totah, and Mouzam Makkar.

Apache: la Vida de Carlos Tévez

Though Carlos Tévez never became a top goalscorer like his fellow countryman Sergio Aguero, the former Argentina international had an impressive career nevertheless. With an important goal, Carlos Tévez recently won the Argentinian league title with Boca Juniors, one of many moments in the spectacular career of the now 36-year old football player. ‘Apache: The Life of Carlos Tevez’ shows his rise to soccer stardom amid the agonizing conditions in Argentina’s Fuerte Apache. This 2019 series is available on Netflix.

Iverson (2014)

Iverson is a 2014 documentary about the legacy of NBA legend Allen Iverson, who rose from a childhood of crushing poverty to become an 11-time NBA All-Star and universally recognized icon of his sport. The documentary brings you back to Iverson’s childhood when he was handed a 15-year jail sentence, while always maintaining his innocence, up to his rise to success. Just as the first three documentaries in this list, Iverson is available on Netflix.

Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (2006)

This 2006 documentary solely focuses on Zidane during the Spanish La Liga match played between Real Madrid and Villarreal on the 23rd of April, 2005 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The documentary was filmed using 17 synchronized cameras, offering a unique perspective. During the minutes of the match, Zidane was sent off as a result of a brawl. Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait offers an unusual and surprisingly thoughtful experience looking at the legendary football player Zinedine Zidane used to be. The documentary is available to be purchased on iTunes.

Barça Dreams (2015)

If you are a Real Madrid fan, you might want to skip this one. But if you are not, you’re in for a ride. In this documentary, all aspects of the Catalan club are covered: from La Masia to Camp Nou, from Cruijff to Messi. Many big names have contributed to this film, from Gary Lineker to club legends Cruijff, Iniesta, Messi, Pique and Xavi. ‘Barça Dreams’ shows what makes the Blaugrana one of the most unique clubs in the world. In many ways, this 2015 documentary can be considered one of the most complete documentaries ever to be made about the story of FC Barcelona. Barça Dreams is available on Netflix.

Diego Maradona (2019)

‘Diego Maradona’ is a 2019 documentary film about the legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage. Even if you are not a football fan, this documentary is worth seeing. By many, Diego Maradona is considered to be the best football player to ever have walked on this planet and this film shows how a poor boy from Buenos Aires, Argentina, became one of the biggest football stars ever. In this 2019 documentary, you’ll see his moments in the spotlight but also less positive things that happened behind the scene. ‘Diego Maradona’ is available on HBO.
