Every year, about 2.5 million people decide to begin golfing. They need to learn golfing terminology, form, and strategy.
If you’ve decided to give golf a try, we can help you get started in this historic sport. Check out these four tips to keep in mind as you begin to learn how to play golf.
1. You Only Need a Few Clubs
You can have up to 14 clubs in your bag, but when you’re beginning, you won’t need nearly that many. Start with mastering the basics. These clubs will help you learn the core skills of the game.
- Driver
- Putter
- Sand Wedge
- 6 Iron
- 8 Iron
- Pitching Wedge
- Fairway Wood
Start with the first three clubs on the list, then supplement with the rest as you develop your skills.
2. Choose the Right Ball
Don’t invest in high-end expensive balls when you’re learning. You’re going to lose quite a few. So as a beginner, buy your balls on a sliding scale based on how many you lose.
If you’ve never played before or lose two sleeves a round, then keep your cost around $20 a dozen. Once you cut your lost number down to about five or less, then you can up your expenditure to around $30 a dozen.
Once you develop your skills and you’re losing less than a sleeve a round, then you can consider buying balls that cost $40 a dozen. Consider looking online; you’ll find more options when it comes to brand and customization of your golf balls.
3. Get Professional Instruction
The great thing about being a beginner is that you don’t know anything and don’t have bad habits. This will make learning from an instructor easier. So don’t wait until you’re struggling or have questions to seek out guidance.
You also want to seek out professional instruction. While your golf buddies may have a decent tip every once in a while, they aren’t experts. A PGA professional has the proper training and knowledge to teach someone the ins and outs of golf.
4. Develop a Range Routine
Just like any other physical activity, you need to warm up before you go hard. So don’t head to the range and try to sling out drivers at the maximum distance. This will get you all out of whack fast.
Instead, start slow with your short iron or wedge. Slowly increase the speed and length of your swings as your muscles warm-up. Once you reach the driver, you’ll hit a few balls and then go back to the beginning and start with the wedge again.
