Did you know that almost all Americans have tooth decay and more than a quarter have an untreated cavity? Do you currently have a cavity and are wondering about your treatment options?

In this article, you’ll learn all about cavity treatment so they can finally go away. Read on to discover what your treatment options are so you can finally say goodbye to those pesky cavities.

1. Dental Crown Treatment

Dental crown treatment is an option for an impaired tooth or a more comprehensive cavity. Your dentist will cut away the decayed part of your tooth and will make sure the crown fits well. Crowns can be made from resin, porcelain, gold, and other materials.

2. Restoration Treatment

Fillings or teeth restoration are the primary options for treating tooth decay. Some options for materials are porcelain, dental mixture, or tooth-colored complex resins.

3. Fluoride Treatment

When your cavity is in the early stages, it can be treated with fluoride. Your dentist will use a gel varnish, foam fluoride, or liquid solution to coat your teeth and strengthen the enamel. You’ll either have the fluoride applied directly onto your tooth or into a tray that fits over your teeth.

There are many treatments for cavities, and it’s important to understand when your dentist will use what option.

4. Root Canal

When a cavity is deep into your tooth’s pulp, and the inside of your tooth is decayed, dead, or infected, a root canal might be the only option. Your dentist will make an incision near the top of your tooth, and remove any decaying pulp from inside the tooth. Then your tooth will be filled with sealing paste and rubber-like material.

To prevent a tooth from re-fracturing, sometimes a crown will be required.

5. Tooth Extraction

If your cavity advances too far for the other treatments, tooth extraction could be your only option. This will leave a gap in your smile, which might not only affect aesthetics but also could cause your other teeth to move. Consider getting a dental implant or bridge to replace your missing tooth.

Cavity Prevention

To prevent cavities, make sure you brush at least twice per day, preferably after each meal. Make sure you floss once a day and use a mouthwash that contains fluoride. You’ll also want to be sure to have regular check-ups to your dentist twice a year to ensure your teeth are in tip-top shape.

When you visit with a dental hygienist and dentist, they will make sure to clean your teeth effectively to remove plaque which helps prevent cavities. Speak with your dentist about applying a sealant to your teeth to help protect them against cavities.

Avoid candy and sodas with sugar whenever possible, and instead, opt for sugarless gum and candy.

Cavity Treatment

While getting a cavity and then having to worry about cavity treatment, it can seem overwhelming. Your dentist will help you pick out the best option for your mouth and maintaining a healthy smile. If you’d like to read more about health and lifestyle, check out our other articles.
