If you’re experiencing constant or consistent pain, it may be time to seek the help of an orthopedic doctor.

These specialized doctors can help you manage your pain and provide you with effective solutions to keep it under control.

So, how do you know it’s time to make an appointment? Read on for five key signs a visit to an orthopedic doctor is warranted.

1. Difficulty Climbing Stairs

The joints in your knees and hips can start to deteriorate as you age or if you’re particularly active. This can cause extreme pain which makes it more difficult to do things like climbing a flight of stairs.

If you’re experiencing pain or trouble going up and downstairs, it may be time for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. Depending on the severity, you may need joint replacement surgery to recoup the damaged joints and help you become pain-free.

2. You Have Shoulder Pain

Pain in the shoulders can be extremely debilitating. If your pain gets worse at night or whenever you move, it’s probably time to visit an orthopedic doctor.

You may notice a tender feeling near the joints, which could be a sign of tendonitis. Whether you overuse your shoulders or you have an injury, this area can become inflamed and more painful without proper treatment.

3. Painful Joints? See an Orthopedic Doctor

Joint pain is a common affliction, but if it lasts for three to six months or longer, it’s considered chronic. You may notice swelling or inflammation around the joints, which could be a sign that the bones of your joints are rubbing together.

The most common root of joint pain is arthritis, and this requires professional treatment in order for you to heal and get relief. Women tend to have arthritis more frequently than men, but it’s also prevalent in young people. Your doctor can recommend ways to relieve your pain and options to help you cope.

4. Numbness and Tingling Sensations in the Fingers

If you notice a tingling feeling in your fingers, you could have carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a very common problem, particularly in modern society due to the high use of computers, smartphones, and daily office work.

The nerve from your forearm to the wrist goes through a tunnel, providing feeling to your fingers except for the pinky. If you have had a previous injury to the wrist, work with machinery, or have to flex your wrist often, you could have carpal tunnel.

5. Weak Muscles and Bruising

After an injury, you may experience swelling and pain. You may also notice bruising around the area of the injury which could indicate a muscle contusion.

Sometimes these types of injuries occur when you are hit with a blunt object or your body is slammed into something hard or heavy. An orthopedic doctor can address the bruising, weakness, and muscle pain and address the issue to help you heal safely.

Don’t Hesitate to Get Help

If you’re experiencing any of these signs or symptoms, you should talk to an orthopedic doctor as soon as possible. The sooner you get help, the quicker you can get the relief you need.
