So you’ve always wanted to be a model? There’s no time to start your preparations like today.

Sure, the modeling industry is notorious for its high rates of competition and difficulty for newbies to get into the market. However, there are some basic requirements for the job that any aspiring model should have on hand.

If this is your first time learning about the process, and you’ve been wondering how to start modeling, no worries. You’ve come to the right place. Keep on reading to learn all about the market, and what you need to prepare before approaching any modeling agency.

How to Start Modeling 101: Pick Your Market

Before you can even think about your poses or what you’ll be wearing, you’ll want to make an important decision.

This is when you select your targeted market. Generally speaking, there are four mega-markets and other smaller niche markets.

You’ll want to fit one of those, specifically when it comes to your body measurements, otherwise known as “your stats.”

There is the catwalk, commercial, lingerie/swimsuit, and plus-size markets. When you’re thinking about your traditional 90s models, think Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell, those are catwalk models. They’re more likely to be at least 5’8” with a rather thin silhouette than not.

The more modern interpretation of inclusivity in the industry has created a subcategory of plus-sized models. Admittedly, those usually have the same height constraints, but they’ll wear size 10 and above.

Commercial models are a bit more diverse. Those are the people you see in television ads or print catalogs.

As for the swimsuit/lingerie models, also known as glamour models, think hourglass figures. Thus, most agencies will be looking for ladies with larger bust areas in ration to their waists.

Time to Create a Portfolio

Based on your market selection, you’ll tailor your portfolio pictures to match your chosen market.

Usually, you’ll want to have a few headshots from various angles, as well as a well-balanced mix of straight-faced photos with smiling ones. This is especially important if you’re targeting commercial modeling.

Submit Your Portfolio to Agencies

Now comes the part when you get in touch with the right modelling agencies.

You’ll want to start with some solid research into the reputable agencies that heavily work in the market you’re aiming to join.

Depending on their preferences, some agencies will ask for your book (that’s your portfolio) to be sent via mail, or just fill online forms.

Regardless of the submission process, you’ll want to take advantage of any casting calls. During an open call, models can bring in their portfolio and meet with casting agents in person.

This is a great way to showcase your physique as well as connect with industry insiders.
