I have been doing yoga for a few years now and one of the first things I was told is to invest in a good mat. The benefits of using a mat while exercising are plentiful, so I quickly got one and noticed how much better my practices were because of it.

If you have never bought or even thought about buying a yoga or exercise mat, here are ten benefits of using a mat while exercising:

1. Friction

A lot of people don’t realize how important it is to have the right amount of friction in your mat. I always notice when someone starts on a new mat and they slip and slide all over the place because their mat has too much glide and not enough stick. This is not only dangerous, but can also lead to injuries. A good mat will have just the right amount of friction to keep you in place while you are exercising.

2. Stability

Along with friction, stability is another key benefit of having a good mat. When you are doing Pilates or any other exercise that requires balance, you need a mat that will give you the stability you need to stay safe and focused. A good mat will not move around on you, no matter how hard you are working out.

3. Cushioning

If you are like me and have sensitive knees, then you know how important it is to have a good cushioning in your mat. Without it, you are in for a lot of pain during and after your workouts. A good mat will cushion your joints and help to prevent injuries.

4. Traction

As I mentioned before, traction is important when you are working out on a mat. You don’t want to be sliding all over the place while trying to hold a pose. A good mat will give you the traction you need to stay in place and focus on your workout.

5. Temperature

Believe it or not, the temperature of your mat can make a big difference in your workout. If you are practicing in hot weather, a sticky mat can help to keep you cool. If you are practicing in cold weather, a thicker mat can keep you warm.

6. Durability

A good mat should last you a long time, no matter how often you use it. I have had my mat for over two years and it is still in great condition. So, if you are looking for something that will last, be sure to invest in a good mat that is durable.

7. It’s good for the planet

Many mats are eco-friendly and made from sustainable resources, so it is also a green choice to buy an exercise mat. There are lots of eco-friendly yoga mats being sold today at various price points.

8. Great gift idea

If you have friends or family members that like to do yoga or Pilates, then consider getting them a mat as a gift. It is always nice to receive an eco-friendly gift that can last for years!

9. Variety

There are lots of varieties of yoga mats available – from thicker ones to thinner ones, sticky ones to non-sticky ones, and brightly colored ones to neutrals. You should be able to find the right one for you among all of these options.

10. Better posture

If you are practicing your exercises on a good mat, then your body will become much better at doing them correctly. When I don’t use my mat, I tend to slouch more than usual and my poses are not as accurate. A good mat helps to keep you in the correct pose and improve your posture over time.

So, if you are looking for a way to make your workouts safer and more effective, be sure to invest in a good yoga or large exercise mat! You won’t regret it!
